This paper aims to analyse the way in which language and literature (and, more importantly, language through literature) are taught in secondary schools, via a comparative study of classes in English and Romanian. The main incentive for the approach is that literature is generally the understated component of the discipline usually called “Native language X” or “Foreign language Y”.
