The present study will focus on the situation of Romanian students, whose main difficulty in acquiring the skills for correctly asking questions in English seems to rise from the important differences in the processes applied for deriving interrogatives from base affirmative structures in the two languages. In Romanian a slight change of intonation – in speaking – and the mere addition of a question mark – in writing – are sufficient to turn a statement into an interrogative sentence. On the other hand in English the processes that a basic sentence pattern has to undergo in order to become a question (subject-auxiliary movement, DO-insertion, or WH-movement) look far more complicated from a foreign learner’s perspective.
