Womanhood in Henry James’s Conception, autor Teodora Stoian

Europe is a “vast, vague and dazzling” cultural territory (qtd in Martin 317)- giving James’s heroes the glorious tool to fulfill their passions that America seemed unable to provide after the War. “He was possessed by the vision of an ideal society, he saw (not fancied) the relations between members of such a society” ( Eliot 56 qtd in Martin 318). In this context, James’s attempt is to reach the yearning and possibilities of a universal human society by treating in his books the varying dialog between Europe and America. The great “good place” is neither Europe nor America, but a true society that underlays both.
