The idea of dealing with „tomoboy” as a term which defines a girl or a particular group of girls that do not fall under the classical category of what it is said to be feminine must have been the basis of a wide variety of debates. If one is to have an objective view over the complexity of such a genre-based study, then they need to step outside the stereotypes that have taken over the manner in which people actually relate to each other. My aim for this paper is not to come to categorical data which may or may not trace lines between what a girl is expected to do and what are the exceptions to the rule. On the contrary, I propose an analysis which follows the evolution of the main feminine characters in the novel Road signs that say West by Sylvia Gunnery, in the attempt to build a framework around the idea of those characters being tomboys. I decided to focus on teenagers in order to capture a sequence from the evolution of a tomboy from a little girl to a woman.
