Language for Specific Purposes. The Language of the Law Concepts and Characteristics, autor Cătălina Daria Mărginean

The paper is an explanatory study designed to identify and examine the linguistic particularities of the English language of the law, irrespective of genre, grouping them under three generic characteristics: technicality, coherence and ritualism. In brief, it covers the two components that define it, that is, legal terminology and legal discourse. The selection of features in what concerns common-law terminology is largely based on previous works in the area of legal language, mainly those of David Mellinkoff and Peter Tiersma. With respect to legal discourse, the study is conducted upon excerpts taken from statutory instruments issued by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. However, the investigation closes with a brief account of legal argot which is the shade of colour in the neutral and opaque texture of the English language of the law.
