It is my firm belief that the study of grammar is an essential part of education in school or outside it. Without correct grammar, the written or spoken words tend to lose their meaning and value in most cases. I consider it is highly important that grammar be understood thoroughly. Therefore, it is imperative that teachers resort to the most efficient strategies in order to communicate adequate grammar to all children. From my experience up to the present moment I have learnt that grammar is often regarded as a difficult and at the same time boring subject, and a well-known method, though inefficient and insufficient, is the repetition of correct grammatical structures until they are memorized or learnt by heart. This thing is extremely dull for both students and teachers, and most probably it results in the ability of the student to reiterate what they committed to memory and not a profound and complete comprehension that can be applied in all contexts.
English grammar is complex and all the aspects of it cannot be just memorized, they have to be comprehended in the context of everyday life. Ultimately, the comprehension that I refer to can only be accomplished when the students are stimulated involved and motivated.
The fact that the teachers know the grammar rules is obvious. However, one thing is to know them and another thing is to teach them efficiently and communicate the information in such a way as to make the students not only to understand them but also to apply them correctly. From my experience as a teacher of English I can state that the teaching of grammar in accordance with the regulations, “by the book”, more exactly cantered round the traditional approach, loses its benefits. Students do not want to learn the rules … because this is not their goal. They want to learn English. They want to talk, read and write in English. Consequently, we teachers have to adopt new strategies, modern strategies so that our students assimilate essential notions of grammar in real contexts and in amusing ways that can satisfy their need to reach their communicative goals.
