Improving Listening Skills at High School Level, autor Lavinia-Delia Andrei

This paper that I named Improving Listening Skills at High School Level starts from the premise that listening is the primary channel of learning a language. Since we spend up to 40-50% of our time listening, the fundamental role listening plays in both communication and language learning cannot be ignored. However, of the four dominant skills, listening has been neglected in the L2 literature until quite recently as most researchers considered it a passive skill that could be developed without assistance. I found this to be particularly intriguing, all the more so since some of my own students, especially 9th graders, seemed to hold pre-conceived ideas as to its practice. Therefore, I chose to have a deep look into this topic driven by the need to change some mindsets about this skill as well as by the desire to make students aware of the language mechanisms that can help them improve their listening skills.
By undertaking the current research, I also hope to find answers to several questions that seem of great importance for my teaching goal: What is the purpose of listening? How do we do it? What are the major listening difficulties our students are facing? How may we, as teachers, best help them to master these difficulties? In other words, we need a clear idea of what the students will be able to do as the end result of their learning and how to get there.
