Aspects of American Cultural Identity Reflected in Literature and Popular Culture, autor Corina Lungu

Cherished by some and criticized by others, the rigid Puritan tradition represents one of the major influences on the culture of the United States of America. Austere Calvinist values, consciousness of sin and preference of morality to beauty have shaped early American literature, but also affected later writers, such as Hawthorne. In the nineteenth century, he represents in his works the world of his ancestors, promoters of Puritan beliefs who had taken part in the controversial Salem witch-trial. The Scarlet Letter represents a definition of sin and its consequences, as well as an analysis of the fate of the self in Puritan America. However, Hawthorne attempts to reveal the psychological effect of the conviction of sin on Puritans in a naturalist manner rather than judge. Moreover, through the symbols and imagery he uses, the author exhibits his perspective upon the Puritan society and its extreme practices.
