Motivation by Gender. Classroom Anticipated Problems and Solutions, autor Carmen Mădălina Vatamaniuc


The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent proper motivation can influence the degree of pupils’ receptivity towards English. As a young teacher/student the question of teaching in an appealing manner is highly important to me, as teaching for different ages and genders seems to overlap various methods, none being suited for all categories of age and sex.
This paper is about motivation and what drives different genders towards learning the English language as well as what aspects of the language interest boys and girls in particular.
To that purpose, it also addresses some challenges that can occur in the English learning environment and discusses how these challenges can be met and solved, while still keeping in mind gender differences. It offers solutions for difficulties that normally happen in any typical classroom. These difficulties are analyzed both from the perspective of the teacher and the learners.
People’s motivation and attitude for learning English has been different through time, and influenced not only by difficulty of subject, but also by subjective factors like pupils gender, and teacher personality. In the field of SLA, there have been various attempts to define second language learning motivation and to discover relationships between motivation and gender. Thus, it is very important for an English teacher to comprehend the differences between genders and to adapt his or hers curriculum to suit the specific needs of each category individually.
The present paper aims to answer the dilemma of why some pupils are motivated to learn the English language and some are not, it explores the differences in motivational sub-constructs based on the variable of gender, and what is more than that, it suggests how to get those who are not motivated to learn English, to take a second look at the importance of the language and have a second go at it.
It also proposes to have a closer look at the learners’ mentality in order to associate it with different teaching principles.
