Nowadays, English has become the accepted international language, which gives it the status of essential means of communication between individuals of different societies and between societies. This fact led to the evolution of the linguistic system in multiple directions. The English language keeps up with the development of the society, at all the levels, which translates into diversification of its branches, according to the various purposes it serves. This evolution produces changes at all the levels of the language. Original and fundamental ideas for the linguistic theory, upon this specific subject, have produced linguists such as Hutchinson and Waters, Mackay and Mountford, some of the first theoreticians of ESP, in the 70s and 80s. They have stressed the importance of ESP in the process of teaching and finding a proper approach towards language acquisition.
The study I will carry on, intends, broadly, to analyse these changes in the language structure in a certain compartment – i.e. English for Business and Economics – from one of the main branches – English for Specific Purposes. Its usability lies in the fact that it offers an insight into the inner structure of the noun phrase and its functionality at the syntactic level.
Like a well-structured study, the present one is based on a theoretical basis on which the entire demonstration is founded. The research starts from identifying the essential moments which have led to the birth of this branch of English, and the importance of ESP for society in present and in the future. Establishing the characteristics of the economics discourse (long sentences, lengthy noun phrases, preference for nouns and nominalisation) has concluded in identifying the problematic elements in the structure of economics discourse – the noun phrase. The analysis of this syntactic element begins with its context in general English, followed by an examination of nominal structures in economic discourse, highlighting the features that distinguish these phrases. The theory is sustained by practical examples. The difficulty comes from the differences in structure between Romanian and English, from the emphasis on premodification that the English language features. The Romanian learner/reader/translator needs to understand the way nominal phrases are constructed and function in English in order to be able to translate. The present study offers the background for understanding nominality in the specialized discourse.
The bibliography sums up important works published during times of intense researching and innovation along the evolution of ESP but also synthesis books of recent date which gather together all research carried on so far. Worth mentioning are Hutchinson and Waters, Mackay and Mountford, Evans, Carter, Croitoru.
The volumes by Greenbaum and Quirk, Martinet and Thompson, and Brieger and Sweeney provided the comprehensive and reliable theoretical framework for the grammar sections. The conclusions of the work are displayed systematically offering an overview of the result of my research.
