During the last fifty years, English has emerged as the most sought-after language for foreign learners throughout the world. As the demand for effective English teaching has increased, the critical awareness of both teacher and trainee has heightened.
It is not surprising therefore, that the present mood in language teaching and testing is one of restlessness and continuous movement. Nothing could be healthier for a profession. Moreover, in no other profession would one find so many young, critical and enthusiastic practitioners. When elaborating texts, textbook writers have to take into account the requirements of the learning/ teaching reform in our country. At the same time, they must keep pace with international examination, such as TOEFL and Cambridge examinations, to ensure that standards are being met and that examinations develop in order to meet the changing needs of the candidates. Their task, therefore, is not an easy one, as they have not only to adopt different types of tests but also to adapt them to the specific conditions in our country.
This does not necessarily mean lack of originality, adaptation requiring both psychological and methodological research. To adopt international types of texts means reading everything that was published in the respective field and choosing the best solutions. To adapt these types of texts to the Romanian context is rather like adapting a classical play for the cinema. You need talent and hard work to do it properly.
