This paper reports a study on the politeness strategies used by native speakers of English, Americans and non-native speakers, Romanians. The paper has three aims:
• To discover similarities and differences in politeness strategies between American English speakers and Romanian speakers;
• To provide evidence for or against the idea that, in understanding the strategies of politeness resulted from a multicultural interaction, one has to be aware of factors such as the subjectivity of perception, of the communication management, and the cultural background of the persons involved in such an act;
• To reveal differences of social values between the two groups.
