Literature in the classroom is a fascinating method of teaching or encouraging the communication skills of English language learners, despite the fact that most teenagers do not typically read literary texts for pleasure. And yet, I hoped I could prove that the literary text is a very effective tool when used to encourage communication. Literature in the classroom has several advantages: it is motivating, it is authentic material, students learn about a different culture, they learn new vocabulary in a real-world context, it functions as a model for writing, and it facilitates discussion, among others. If students enjoy what they are learning and how they are learning it, they will be more engaged in the learning process, resulting in improved academic outcomes.
