Samuel Beckett is one of the most erudite writers of the twentieth century, who brought to the theatre and the novel an acute sense of the absurdity of human existence, meaning human’s desperate search for understanding their individual isolation. He was a remarkable writer who won international fame; his works have been translated into over twenty languages. In 1969 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. His work has been intensely and internationally studied by critics, produced on stage and TV, and continues to be greeted more or less equal proportions of fascination and devotion.
Samuel Beckett brought some major changes in the tradition of prose fiction and drama. He abolished the sure and reliable notions of characters, time, plots, settings and narrative conventions.

Samuel Beckett belongs to the Modernist period of creation. Although he is an Irish writer, he spent most of his life in France and all of his major works were originally written in French- a curious phenomenon since Beckett’s mother tongue was accepted as international language of the twentieth century. He is usually found among French writers in literary history in the twentieth century.
Many French writers of the post-war period came out of the Surrealist Movement or were strongly influenced by it. Post-war developments were found in all literature domains: poetry, fiction and theatre.
Modern poetry in France (as in other countries) became personal, obscure, and hard to understand. One consequence has been a decreasing number of those who read poetry.
In fiction, the term New Novel refers to a group of novels written in 1950s.
