The study is structured into two main parts (chapters), to which an introduction, conclusions and appendices were added. It presents the theoretical frame, applies it to the actual practice of teaching at secondary school level and focuses on the experimental activities carried out and the ensuing materials.
The first section of the paper focuses on the role of literature in studying a language, with emphasis on the connection between literature and art and on the techniques involved in approaching it. It begins with a brief overview of the process of perceiving a literary text, highlights some methods and procedures for studying language and literature, developing the capacity of receiving oral messages and themes that lead to the study of written literature in English and Romanian classes. Then, the literary text is seen as a pretext for pursuing the study of English, for acquiring communication skills, decoding a text, learning how to read, understanding the importance of the vocabulary involved and foregrounding the teacher’ s role.
Chapter two presents the development of cultural representations, the positive attitudes and interests in language study and in the Anglo-Saxon cultural space in English classes dedicated to: novel or traditional grammar patterns, the basic vocabulary used in these texts, the specific aspects of culture and civilization. It ‘also deals with issues of curriculum structure, identifying objectives and performance standards by comparing the two subjects (English and Romanian), the material resources used in teaching, the thematic organization of content and the role of literature textbook, thus targeting the advantages and disadvantages of the theme under the lens.
Of course, the paper does not boast of an exhaustive treatment of the issue under scrutiny, its ultimate objectives being those of raising awareness as to the role of literature in young people’s lives and of opening up the discussion on the way in which literature is dealt with in the educational system.

Chapter one addresses the similarities and dissimilarities between the two subjects and foregrounds cross curricular and applied activities in the classroom, looking into: the literary language used; writing the main •ideas (intended to identify the narrator’s point of v1ew); the distinction between fiction and autobiography; sources of humour; how atmosphere is created; producing creative writing; the correspondence with the real; reading poetry etc. In short, this last section includes the intended comparative-contrastive approach to teaching English and Romanian.
Chapter two of this paper deals with the results of a research. The first section intends to reinstate the mother tongue importance starting from Atkinson’s opinion and to make some suggestions for activities which use Ll in mono-lingual classes through a questionnaire handed to the students and teachers. The next section of this chapter expresses the results of a second questionnaire. The purpose is to investigate the effects of the teaching of revision strategies in a computer – based environment both on revision and on the quality of texts. The third section of this chapter focuses on the answers of the teachers and of the students on an interview. The last part of this chapter includes a vast amount of resources that is used during the English classes which are specifically on the subject and divided into two appendices.

This paper aims to analyse the way in which language and literature (and, more importantly, language through literature) are taught in secondary schools, via a comparative study of classes in English and Romanian. The main incentive for the approach is that literature is generally the understated component of the discipline usually called “Native language X” or “Foreign language Y”.
