Aiming to facilitate the learning of the English language within the formal framework provided by the school system, the present work seeks to demonstrate the usefulness of employing songs and games in the classroom. Since learning a foreign language involves acquiring communicative competences—which in turn include vocabulary and grammar knowledge—the following section will present an overview of the methodological and pedagogical issues related to the use of songs and games.
The purpose of this work is not to propose a new theoretical approach, but to offer a systematic review of the specialized literature, which will allow for a methodological and practical description and for the sharing of effective English teaching activities. Adriana Vizental argues that a major shortcoming of traditional teaching has been the fact that teachers focused exclusively on vocabulary and grammar, ignoring the complex network of skills, the functional capacity of language, and interactive communication.
