Modality and modal concepts may very well be traced back to Aristotle and Greek philosophy. Human beings frequently categorise their thoughts and experiences in terms of how things could or must be, might have been or must have been, rather than how they are or were. The concept of modality was studied even before linguistics was established as a separate field of research.<br />
While focusing on the relationship between necessity and possibility, Aristotle also noted the validity of arguments in terms of their premises. Another significant contribution to this field was made by the Stoics, who were able to study the modal logic of words such as not, and or or. <bt><br />
Going deeper into the analysis, it is important to distinguish between the two central elements: mood and modality.
