This thesis examines the portrayal of evil in a primetime television series, specifically, the transformations of villains in main characters as revealed through the reading of well-known fairy tales and an analysis on the television series Once Upon a Time created by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz in 2011. We want to explore what happens, cognitively speaking, when readers are confronted with those re-writings of fairy tales that put the villain centre-stage and provide them with a complexity that was typically not present in the source text.

Fairy tales present the world in black and white, but in the end this conflict is resolved, and happiness, joy and contentment become the optimistic expression of hope for a world as it should be. This trust in ultimate justice and the belief in the good of humanity have to be important to adults today if hope is to exist for mankind at all in an age that is anything but a fairy tale.
Personally, I enjoy both reading a book and watching the television interpretation of it as I find it really interesting to compare two different sides of the same story. This is why I decided to make a comparison between the classical fairy tales and how they are interpreted in the television series Once Upon a Time. With a book, I can form my own mental images of the characters, while a film reflects the needs of a society. But there are obviously extreme similarities between fiction and feature, books and films. One of the most wonderful things about reading is that everyone can create their own ideas of the character’s looks, thoughts, and interactions.
