The purpose of this paper is to highlight the differences in use and interpretation of “please”, “thank you”, frankness, and politeness, and an inventory of expressive politeness1 would not bring meaningful information about social interaction in the 19th and 20thcentury. Starting from the utterance level with expressives, commissives, and impositives, we explore the norm of the 19th and 20th century English, which can be marked/unmarked/appropriate/inappropriate/politic/polite behaviour, based on the hearer’s reactions, and, with a view to finally findings, indications that reveal the speaker’s intentions and a possible change in the politeness paradigm. Also, it is desirable to find a solution for politeness1 interpretation without interviewing the participants, but at the same time, to avoid singular meanings for politeness utterances; we consider the author’s comments the objectified reality of the characters’ linguistic choices endowed with personal beliefs and social pressure, both being a product of the historical context when the novel was written and the time the novel is set.
