The present study will focus on the situation of Romanian students, whose main difficulty in acquiring the skills for correctly asking questions in English seems to rise from the important differences in the processes applied for deriving interrogatives from base affirmative structures in the two languages. In Romanian a slight change of intonation – in speaking – and the mere addition of a question mark – in writing – are sufficient to turn a statement into an interrogative sentence. On the other hand in English the processes that a basic sentence pattern has to undergo in order to become a question (subject-auxiliary movement, DO-insertion, or WH-movement) look far more complicated from a foreign learner’s perspective.

Je propose dans ce mémoire une lecture du roman de Miguel de Unamuno Le roman de Don Sandalio, joueur d’échecs dans le but de donner une réponse à une des questions majeures qui préoccupent les écrivains et critiques à partir du siècle passé, à savoir: « Qu’est-ce qu’un roman ? » Loin d’être une question simple, elle entraîne des analyses profondes et complexes sur les rapports entre le réel et le fictionnel, entre l’acte de création littéraire et son produit, entre le créateur, la réalité, la fiction romanesque et le lecteur, rapports sur lesquels la vision des écrivains, des philosophes et des théoriciens a changé à travers le temps.
